The Pittsburgh Steelers are an NFL team located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They were founded in 1933 and currently belong to the AFC North Division of the NFL. The Steelers are the oldest team in the AFC. They originated as the Pittsburgh Pirates before changing to the Steelers in 1940. The team also combined with the Philadelphia Eagles during the 1943 season to make the “Steagles”. This merger happened because both teams had most of their rosters involved in World War II.

The Pittsburgh Steelers currently hold the record for most Super Bowl titles by an NFL franchise with six. This led to the team being referred to as “Sixburgh” after the sixth championship was won in 2009. One amazing aspect of the Steelers franchise is the stability of the ownership. Since it’s inception, the franchise has been owned by the Rooney family. Art Rooney started the franchise in 1933, it was then passed to the current owner, Art’s son, Dan Rooney, and it is already slowly being handed down to Dan’s son, Art Rooney II. The ownership stability has also impacted the head coach stability of the team. Since 1969, the Steelers have only had 3 different head coaches. Chuck Knoll coached from 1969-1991, Bill Cowher coached from 1992-2006, and since then the team has been coached by Mike Tomlin. Other franchises will hire and fire head coaches year after year, but the Steelers remain as stable as possible and it has worked out well. Those 3 coaches have combined for 6 Super Bowl championship wins in their time with the team, that says a lot about loyalty and having trust in the team’s head coach.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have embodied hard work, loyalty, and determination since their inception and continue that tradition today.
